BIKING (CYCLING) AROUND MYANMAR

Every one knows Myanmar has a lot of destinations to offer to the tourists; beaches, rivers, flatlands, deltas, mountains, forests, farm and fields. Biking is a very good way to explore the hidden corners of them where other means of transportation cannot bring you to.

Your trip of cycling round Myanmar will cut through quiet back-roads between rice fields, temples, and scenic countryside. Passing through many small villages, you will find the friendliness and politeness of locals. Sharing the road with ox carts, other cyclists, and excited children. Most rides are on country lanes with almost no traffic.

DAY 01: ARRIVAL (WELCOME TO GARDEN CITY YANGON) – Meal (No)

Meet with our escort and driver at the airport and drive to your hotel when the hotel is available to check in. Yangon( Rangoon) is the beautiful city which has beautiful lakes and 187 colonial buildings in restored. On the way, you can see the activities like; buses, trishaw, vendors, students, locals at the bus stop, etc…… and beautiful sceneries of Garden City Yangon. After check in and refreshing, starting city tours including Yangon City Hall which is beside shinning Sule Pagoda and the beautiful Bengali Sunni Jameh Mosque. On the other side, it is also Immanuel Baptist church. That represents freedom of religion in Myanmar, all the different religions respect one another and live peacefully together in Myanmar.

Next, to the Church, it is the Independent Monument which stands gracefully in Mahabandoola Park (former Fytche Square from 1867), where Yangoners gether for festivals and events or just for relaxation. Next, to the park, you can see the eyes catching Victorian style red building, the Supreme Court. Continue exploring along the colonial area, there are many huge buildings by impressive architecture like Render House, Economic Bank, the office of Inland Water Transport, the District Court of Western Yangon, Myanmar Port Authority and the Custom House are reminding the olden days of Yangon. The remarkable colonial buildings like the Strand Hotel and the General Post Office can be seen on the Strand road. On a little bit too up north, the oldest Armenian Church surviving in 1863. And then, you can continue the tours to see the Secretariat, one of the historical buildings in beautiful architecture.

Another impressive one is St. Mary Cathedral of 1911. And then, shopping at Bogyoke market ( Scott market), it is a busy market which was built in 1926 and there have over 2000 shops selling fashion, jewellery and souvenirs. In the late afternoon, head to the Shwedagon pagoda, it is just not to see the tradition, belief and custom but to enjoy the real life of locals like sellers of flowers, birds ‘ food, fortune tellers for being a place for the public. It is gilded tons of gold and 4,350 diamonds weighing 1800 carats and many precious stones. And then, back to the hotel and overnight at hotel. After enjoying the great pagoda, return to hotel and overnight at hotel.

DAY 02: Yangon – Syriam – Kyauk Tan – Yangon (50 Km Cycling) – Meal (B)

After breakfast, to avoid the traffic of Yangon city, we took a car to the peaceful land, Syriam(Thanlyin) before we pick up our bikes and start cycling to Kyauk Tan. On the way sightseeing the villages to see the ways of life of the local people and some cottage industries. After visit around local market and Kyauk Tan pagoda which is located on the island in the mid river. There you can see locals are enjoying to feed the fishes and drive back to Yangon by car and visit the Village of National Races where you can see the typical style of houses, costumes and copies famous sites of different majorities like Kachin, Kayah, Mon, Rakhine, etc….. Enjoying the view of surrounding from the watchtower. And then, return to hotel overnight at hotel.

DAY 03: Yangon – Dala – Baung Taw Choke – Twante – Yangon (50 Km Cycling) – Meal (B)

After breakfast, we start our day with a short transfer by ferry across the Yangon river to Dala which is the small town but crowded for being a transit town to the delta region. You can see the lifestyle of locals and family business like making candles, re-circled plastics and making rice papers. Then we cycle through Baung Taw Choke pagoda and continue towards Twante. Explore colourful local market . Then visit some pottery making villages where the locals produce various types and different sizes of clay pots by hand. Then visit the hictorical pagoda, Shwesandaw before heading back to Yangon by car. Back to the hotel and overnight at hotel.

DAY 04: Yangon – Bagan (AM flight) (flying hour 1:20) – Meal(B)

After breakfast, check out from the hotel and transfer to airport for flight to Bagan to explore a well known ancient city, Bagan. Meet with our guide at Nyaung -U airport and pick up our bike, and then ride along the archeological site of Bagan, enjoying panoramic beauty of countless temples. And then continue to explore the Nyaung Oo Market which is very active in the morning not only for the local people but also for the tourists. After the market, continue to Shwezigon Pagoda, a prototype of later Myanmar stupa by sandstone, and you can learn how the people of Bagan changed from Animist to Buddhist since in 11th century. Then going to Wet-gyi-in village to see Gubyaukkyi Temple with fine mural paintings of Jataka scenes. Check in your hotel and relax a few hours.

Afternoon exploring by bike to a special place, Khaymeinga pagoda and surrounding. And then, visiting the Ananda Temple which is famous for a smile of standing Buddha from the 11th century and architectural masterpiece resembling a Greek Cross and then going to a nice place for sunset. After sunset, return to hotel and overnight at hotel.



DAY 05: Bagan (50 Km Cycling) Meals (B) – Meal (B)

After breakfast, enjoy another full day cycling. We first head to New Bagan to explore some of the monuments and villages to study locals’ ways of life .Then continues with visits to lacquerware industry where you can study traditional Myanmar lacquerware making in details by hand. In the afternoon going to Manuha Temple to see gigantic Buddha images, a captive king’s impression of life in prison. And walking a short distance to Nanpaya, an Early-style temple with the finest stone carvings.

Then, riding towards the excavation site of old palace and continues riding to original Tharabar Gate from 9th century and the place of moat. Later, explore around Taung Bi Village, chatting with friendly villagers and cycling along the Ayarwaddy river bank to enjoy the river view and nice breeze. After watching sunset from Bupaya , back to the hotel and overnight Hotel.



DAY 06: Bagan – Kyaukpataung – Popa – Bagan (69 Km Cycling) – Meal (B)

After breakfast, going to Kyaukpataung which is the south-east of Bagan and visit the busy local market. Then pick up our bikes to start cycling to Mt. Popa (18 km ), which is the abode of Nats ( Spirits ). For being an extinct volcano, the whole area of the mountain is so fertile and freshly cool. You will see little monkeys along the stairs up to Taungkalat (table-mountain).On top of the mountain, you can enjoy the very nice view of surrounding, pagodas and shrines in a different style. After that riding back to Bagan (51 km ), On the way, stop at toddy palm farmer’s cottage to learn how the palm juice is collected and consume as refreshment drink when it is fresh and as local beer when it gets fermented afternoon.

This toddy juice is also the main source of local sugar called Jaggery. Here you can also see how peanut oil is produced with ox drawn grinder. You can try local snack here ( and even the toddy beer if you are adventurous enough ! ) Return to the hotel and overnight Hotel.



DAY 07: Bagan – Mandalay by AM flight (flying hour 0:25) – Meal (B)

After breakfast at the hotel, check out and transfer to airport for flight to Mandalay. Meet with our escort on arrival, and then proceed to the city centre of Mandalay. ( Mandalay was the last capital for Burmese kings, it is still a famous capital for trading with China and it is well known for the variety of handicrafts like stone carving, wood carving, bronze casting, embroidery, silk and weaving.) Meet with our escort on arrival, and then proceed to U Bein’s bridge, it is the longest wooden bridge in the world. Then a short visit to Gold foil making workshop.

Later, transfer and check-in your hotel and relax a short time, Afternoon sight-seeing begins visiting Shwenandaw Monastery, an original building of King’s palace which is famous for exquisite wood carvings. Then, visit to Kuthodaw Pagoda, known as the World’s Biggest Book for its stone slabs of Buddhist scriptures. And then continues to Mandalay Hill, going up-hill by car/ truck and going up by escalator /elevator to a vantage point for a panoramic view of the city and spectacular sunset view. Return to hotel and overnight at hotel.



DAY 08: Mandalay – Mingun – Sagaing – Ava – Amarapura –Mandalay (70Km Cycling) – Meal (B)

After a very early breakfast, transfer to the Kywe Zun riverside to start bike to the Nan Daw Kyun jetty. Cross the Ayewawaddy River by private boat for 45 minutes upstream to Mingun which is well known for the world biggest ringing bell, Mingun bell ,and the biggest unfinished pagoda, Pahtodawgyi pagoda from 19th century.

Mingun is a peaceful big town with friendly locals and some visitors riding ox-cart as a local taxi for fun. You can find art galleries and souvenirs shops along the main road Sightseeing around Mingun includes: Mingun pagoda known as the biggest brick pile, biggest ringing Mingun bell and Myatheintan pagoda which is compared Taj Maha of India. Then bike towards Sagaingto see some cottages industries and Sagaing hill which almost covered by religious buildings facing to the river. Then, proceed to Amarapura, and watching sunset at U Bein’s bridge which is the longest wooden bridge in the world. Drive back by car to the hotel and overnight at hotel.



DAY 09: Mandalay – Pyin Oo Lwin (50Km Cycling) – Meal (B)

After breakfast at the hotel, transfer to the train station for train to Pyin Oo Lwin( also known as May Myo), on the way we have a chance to experience several zig-zags which help the train to climb the steep mountain.

It is a beautiful colonial hill station and situated 1070 meters (3510 feet) above the sea level. Many colonial buildings, a big lake and big garden covered by nice landscape, flowers and orchids. When we arrive there, we can take colonial styled horse cart to visit the market. And then pick up our bikes and start cycling to Anee Sa Khan and Paikchinmyang Cave Which were attracted to its cool, spring-like weather, pine forests, waterfall and lakes. Then drive back to the hotel for check in and overnight at hotel.



DAY 10: Pyin Oo Lwin – Mandalay (70Km Cycling) – Meal (B)

After breakfast at the hotel, we will take bikes for 2 hours ride down the hill back to Mandalay. On the way back we will ride pass fields and stop at wholesale market of flowers, strawberry farms, organic farm , meet with villagers and visit some cottages industry. Afterwards, we will return to Mandalay and check in to hotel, free and leisure and overnight at hotel.

DAY 11: Mandalay – Heho – Kalaw (25Km Cycling) – Meal (B)

After a very early breakfast at the hotel, you will be transfer to airport for flight to Heho. Meet with our guide on arrival to Heho airport. Then, pick up our bikes for cycling on beautiful undulating roads passing colourful vegetables farm and rice fields. Riding till to Kalaw, a British hill station with colonial buildings, and check in your hotel.After refreshment, visiting the old train station, viewing panoramic from Thein Taung monastery, visiting Lacquer ware Buddha and some old church. Return to hotel , free at leisure and overnight at hotel.

DAY 12: Kalaw – Pindaya – Inle (50Km Cycling) – Meal (B)

After breakfast at the hotel, visit the morning market of Kalaw, busy with colourful tribes like Palaung, Pa O, Danu people and fresh fruits and vegetables. And then, enjoy another day ride downhill through pine forests, villages and fruits and vegetable plantations as we descend nearly 1200 m from the sea level. In the afternoon, arrive at Pindaya, a quiet town of Danu people who is the famous maker of Shan paper and parasols. You will pass the famous lake, Ponetaloke and Pindaya Cave which is well known for its Buddha statues carved out of limestone.

After visiting Pindaya Cave, going to the house of Danu family who is making Shan papers and beautiful parasols by hand, and then, visit the bamboo hat making family to learn how they make. Later, make a short stop for taking a photo at over 250 years old Banyan trees. Then drive towards to Inle by car. Check in and overnight at Hotel.



DAY 13: Inle Sight-Seeing by Boat – Meal (B)

After breakfast, your morning excursion in Inle Lake visiting around Inle Lake by boat , it is located 875 meters above the sea level and only place you can see unique leg-rowers and floating gardens. You can visit local market( if it is available by market days schedules), the scenic beauty, fishing canoes using special methods for fishing and collecting seaweed, lakebed mud etc to make floating garden .

Then visit Nga Pe Chaung monastery ( also known as Jumping Cat monastery ), along the way you can see many floating gardens. After that, going to Heyaywa ma village which has some families of long neck ladies and famous floating market located.

After that visit to Cheroot making place and carpenter’s work shop to see how they built a boat. Silk weaving and making lotus fabric of Inle are worth to see in Inpawkhone village. In the late afternoon, visit the most famous Paungdaw Oo Pagoda. Return to the hotel and overnight at hotel



DAY 14: Inle – Taunggyi – Kakku – Nankhar – Mine Thauk – Inle (50Km Cycling) – Meal (B)

After a very early breakfast at the hotel, drive to Taunggyi the capital of Shan State and continue to Kakku by car. After that, visit magnificent Kakku Pagoda, a complex of over 2000 stupas which has just recently been opened for foreign visitors. We pick up our bike to start cycling to Nankhar village and through the range of mountain stretching to Mine Thauk.

There are great photo stops and lush vegetation along the way pass through lush jungle and beautiful villages nestled under the shadow of Shan plateau. At the end of the day, reach Nyaung Shwe, a remote town where Inle lake is situated. Return to hotel and overnight at hotel.



DAY 15: Heho – Yangon with evening flight (flying hour 1:10) – Meal (B)

After breakfast, starting trip to Indein, the hidden treasure of Inle. You can enjoy boat ride in a narrow canal to indein village which is peaceful place with little bamboo forest , friendly villagers, powerful weir and over 1000 ruin pagodas . After your explore, going to jetty and transfer to Heho airport for your flight to Yangon.Meet with your escort at airport and transfer to hotel and overnight at hotel.

DAY 16: FREE DAY IN YANGON-DEPARTURE – Meal (B)

After breakfast, free at leisure until your departure time and transfer to Yangon International Airport.
