Pyay (formerly known as Prome) lies on a sharp bend in the Ayeyarwady River. It can be reached by road (an five-hour drive north of Yangon). Nearby one can observe the ruins of the ancient Pyu capital of Thayekhittaya. Pyay serves as an important transshipment point for cargo moving between Upper and Lower Myanmar along the Ayeyarwady River. Pyay has a famous pagoda named Shwesandaw. One of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage spots in Myanmar, the pagoda is perched on top of the hill in the centre of the town.

Day 01: Arrival Yangon – Meal(None)

After breakfast at the hotel, meet with our guide to proceed by coach to Pyay 290 km ( 5hrs drive ) north-west of Yangon. Stop for a while at Htaunt Kyant Allied War Cemetery to see the memorial record of 27000 soldiers who gave their lives to save the world in the Second World War. And then, continue driving to Pyay enjoying picturesque landscape of paddy fields and villages along the way. Before entering Pyi, at a small town called Shwedaung(14km to Pyay), we will visit Shwe Myat Hman Pagoda with its unique looking Buddha image and listen to the story behind it. It is believed that praying at this Buddha image can cure diseases, especially for eyes sight. Then continue driving and check in your hotel.

After refreshment, visit the UNESCO heritage site of the 3rd century, Sri Ksetra, the ancient Pyu capital where the remains of the city wall, the palace site, and other religious buildings are well preserved. Among them, the huge cylindrical- brick built, Payargyi and Baw Baw Gyi stupas and then visit Hmaw Za Museum, where many pieces of beads, clay pipes, Buddha images, sandstone carvings of guardian, some old bronze figures of 5th to 9th century can be seen. And then, explore to Lay Myat Hna stupa which is not only a religion building but also a watch tower with the warning system to alert the palace of the approaching enemies and finally the royal cemetery.

Then, drive back to hotel and overnight in Pyay.



Day 02: Arrival Yangon – Meal (B)

After breakfast at the hotel, we visit Shwesandaw Pagoda, which is located on the hill top in the center of the town and is one of Myanmar’s important pilgrimage sites. It offers panoramic views of Sei Htet Gyi ( huge sitting Buddha, Ayarwaddy river and the heart of the town. Then we proceed by two hours drive to Htone Bo and 30 minutes by boat to ‘Akauktaung’, (Customs Hill), a scenic spot south-west of Pyay where dozens of Buddha images were carved into the cliff walls overlooking the Irrawaddy.

It is said that 16th-century Custom officers who were posted here to collect Tax from the cargo ships spend their spare time curving these interesting Buddha images on the cliff wall. This excursion is like a soft hiking to a religious site with the panoramic view of the Irrawaddy River and surrounding hills. After this, we return by car to Yangon. Upon arrival in Yangon, transfer to Hotel (or) airport.
