MRAUK-U ( MROHAUNG ) EXTENSION from Yangon

Mrauk-U, the ancient city of Rakhine Kingdom (15th Century), is known for its old temples with wall paintings of Indian cultural influence. It is reached by boat along Kalatan River from Sittwe (Akyab), the capital of Rakhine State. The boat trip takes about 5 hours. 

The highlights of Mrauk-U are the massive Shitthaungpaya a curiously remarkable temple with countless Buddha Images and relief's, the fortress-like temple Htaukkan-thein noted for the interesting stone sculptures in the vaulted passages; an octagonal temple Andaw-thein with its unique stone carvings and flora designs; Sakya-Man-Aung, a tall attenuated stupa; and Archaeological Museum.

Eight kilometres to the north of Mrauk-U is Wethali (Vesali); another ancient capital (8th to 10th centuries A.D.). On going upstream by boat for 2 hours to Chin Hilltribe Village one can visit in the nearby places, people with tattoo on the faces.

Itinerary

Day 1 YANGON / SITTWE by flight

After breakfast, transfer to airport for flight to Sittwe. On arrival transfer to hotel for check in then followed by sightseeing to a busy port "Gawli Bunga" ( Bamboo & Thatch Market ), local fish market and also visit cultural museum - Pharagree at Fakir point ( Sea Beach ). Overnight at Shwethazin Hotel.

Day 2 SITTWE / MRAUK-U

After breakfast, proceed to Mrauk-U ( an ancient Capital of 600 years old ) 6 hours trip by chartered boat ( ETD 07.00 hours ). Transfer to hotel then followed by sightseeing to SAKYAMANAUNG ( early 17^th century stupa ) rattanamanaung ( MID 17^th century stupa), Laungbwannbrauk Stupa ( The coloured plaque pagoda, early 16^th century ). Anndaw Thein, Shiethaung Temple ( the most well known and Massive Temple of 80 thousand Buddha images & sculptures ). Lemyathna ( four faced Temple) & Htukkant Thein Temple ( a museum of Traditional costumes of Mrauk - U period ). Sunset from Herredaung hill. Overnight at Hotel. (B)

(Note! Although Mrauk-U is a very interesting place, it is very difficult for accessibility and there are few visitors going to that place. As there is no air-conditioned bus the visitors have to rely on old jeeps from Second World War.)

Day 3 MRAUK-U

After breakfast, sightseeing of Mrauk-U, an ancient city of Rakhine Kingdom (15^th century ), includes visits to the massive Shitthaung-Paya, a curiously remarkable temple with countless Buddha images and reliefs, the fortress-like temple; Htaukkan-Thein, noted for the interesting stone sculptures in the vaulted passages; an octagonal temple Andawthein with its unique stone carvings and floral designs. Sakya-Man-Aung, a tall attenuated stupa.

Tour continues to one more ancient capital of Rakhine Kingdom called Dhanyawaddy which is about 22 Kilometers to the north of Vesali. Overnight at Hotel. (B) (or) Visit Mahamuni ( 18 Hundred year - old shrine of Buddha image), Vesali image (17^th high carved of a single block of stone). Excavation site. Lawkamanaung: Pharabaw.

Afternoon - visit Luckkauk zee Monestry, Bandoola monestry, Lasaykan lake, Old city gate, Ko Thaung Temple ( Massive Ruined temple under excavation), sunset at Shwe Daung. Overnight at Hotel. (B)

Day 4 MRAUK-U - Tribal village ( Day trip )

After breakfast proceed by boat to Chin tribal village by small boat that is motivate by a small engine. The up stream along the Lay Myo river will take about 2 hours and no one will get board while passing through the true nature and scenic views. Finally, arrive at this typical village where one can experience their way of life and amazing face tattooed Chin ladies.

Here is the time to listen the traditional believes of these villagers from your local guide. Return the same way back and that calls for the day. Overnight at hotel. (B)

Day 5 MRAUK-U – SITTWE – YANGON

After breakfast at hotel check-out and transfer to jetty and for Sittwe. Arrive at Sittwe, transfer to airpot for flight back to Yangon. (B) Bon Voyage.

REMARKS

1. (1) At present Yangon / Sittwe flights is operated on Mon, Tue, Wed, Sat & Sun only.
   (2) It is not very interesting to visit Dhanyawaddy and Vesali even though they are older than Mrauk-U because there are now very few interesting sites left for sightseeing.
